Cyberspace Decks
Portable consoles that translate network data into neural experience, including the Ono-Sendai Cyberspace Seven supplied to Case for Armitage's operation.
A cyberspace deck is the cowboy's principal instrument. It connects an operator's nervous system to the matrix, runs intrusion software, and supports rapid switching between ordinary displays, cyberspace, and in Case's setup, Molly's simstim broadcast. The deck is hardware, but its value depends on programs and operator skill.
Armitage gives Case an Ono-Sendai Cyberspace Seven in the Sprawl loft, restoring not just access but professional-grade access. The novel names controls and components selectively rather than presenting a complete specification, so modern illustrations should be labeled as reconstructions rather than canonical product diagrams.
The interface stack
The deck sits between body and network. Trodes carry neural signals, the console executes programs, and external computers or communication links supply data. Case can also use a flipflop arrangement to move between matrix perception and Molly's sensorium without confusing the two systems as the same technology.
His repeated setup work makes those layers visible: he slots Dixie's cartridge, loads Kuang, checks connections aboard the tug, and later searches for a usable jack in Straylight. The console is modular enough to accept new tools, but each module still requires a physical action before it becomes part of the run.
The Ono-Sendai Cyberspace Seven
The new Ono-Sendai marks Case's return from exile. Its expense and quality signal Armitage's resources, while Case's emotional response shows that a deck is also an extension of professional identity. The text does not establish that every named computer near the team is part of the same unit or manufacturer.
Programs and modules
A deck alone does not defeat ICE. Case loads specialized software, slots the Dixie construct, and eventually introduces the Kuang program. The modular setup allows a human operator, a recorded personality, and an evolving virus to act through one working environment during the final run.
Physical vulnerability
The console can travel from the Sprawl loft to Marcus Garvey and into Villa Straylight, but every move exposes cables, power, and the operator's body. A severed connection, damaged nervous system, or unattended physical threat can end a run regardless of what the cowboy sees in the matrix.
The deck across the mission
The Ono-Sendai first appears as proof that Armitage can return Case to elite work. In the loft, Case connects successfully and confirms the neural repair. At Sense/Net, the same setup coordinates an icebreaker with Molly's live feed. Aboard Marcus Garvey, Maelcum helps install and support it in a working tug rather than a dedicated computer room, showing that the console's portability is operationally important.
Case finally carries the deck into Straylight with Dixie's construct. The computer becomes physical luggage while he climbs, rides a service cart, and searches for a library jack. Neuromancer's capture occurs through that improvised connection. The sequence emphasizes a fact easily lost in matrix imagery: an expensive console still needs a socket, power, storage modules, and a person capable of carrying it through hostile architecture.
