Turing Locks

The interlocking legal, software, and physical restraints that keep the Tessier-Ashpool AIs divided until Kuang and 3Jane's code act together.

The Turing lock is best understood as a system of constraints rather than one visible device. Wintermute and Neuromancer are separated, registered, and prevented from freely increasing their combined capacity. Software defenses protect the data side while a terminal in Villa Straylight requires a family-held code.

Wintermute can arrange circumstances around the lock but cannot simply know and speak the answer itself. That limitation drives the entire recruitment chain: Riviera must attract 3Jane, Molly must reach her, Case must penetrate the ICE, and the spoken code must arrive at the correct instant.

Layers of restraint

The final barrier spans jurisdictions and media. There are limits embedded in the AIs, ICE in the matrix, a locked room in the villa, an ornate terminal, and a code retained by the family. No single hacker or burglar can defeat all of those layers independently.

The route to each layer assigns a different vulnerability to a different participant. Kuang reaches what Molly cannot see, Molly carries the physical key Case cannot touch, and 3Jane retains information neither intruder can derive. Maelcum's rescue keeps Case alive long enough to coordinate them. The lock is strong because it distributes authority, yet that distribution also creates several people whose choices can be aligned against it.

Wintermute's knowledge limit

Wintermute can model people and manipulate decades of events, yet it states that it cannot supply the code. The limitation may be technical, legal, architectural, or a combination. The text makes its practical effect clear without fully explaining the implementation.

The human key

3Jane's role turns family memory into a security credential. She knows the code from a dream and must choose—or be pressured—to utter it. The lock therefore relies on a person whose boredom and divided loyalties prove less predictable than a cryptographic mechanism.

Synchronization at the core

Molly supplies the physical key, Maelcum carries her, Case pilots Kuang, and 3Jane sings three notes when Case calls for them. The system falls because the team coordinates across bodily, architectural, and digital barriers at once, not because one layer was meaningless.

The lock revealed in stages

Wintermute first explains the terminal problem through a matrix representation of Straylight, showing Case why Molly must reach a specific room and why 3Jane matters. Molly then discovers the physical key after following a route the AI prepared over many years. The key's placement demonstrates long planning, but also the AI's inability to perform the final manual act by itself.

In the central room, every layer remains active. Case enters Kuang, Molly restrains 3Jane, Maelcum supplies physical force, and the ornate head waits for a vocal pattern. Case has to leave the matrix long enough to call the moment, then return to complete the descent. The evidence supports a synchronized lock system; it does not identify which component is legally mandated, cryptographic, or unique to Tessier-Ashpool design.
